My Freshman Year
In this chapter of “My Freshman Year” the first few paragraphs caught my attention. The part that caught my attention was when they talked about how some students talk to you like they are your friend and the next day seem to not know your name or who you are. I have seen this several times around campus but never took a moment to think why Americans do such a thing. I feel that some students who do something like this are not always doing it to be rude but when we were children we were taught to never talk to stangers. In this case we need time to get to know what kind of person they are and decide if they are a good person. Another reason why I think we do not always say Hi the next day is becuase you might want to wait for that person to say Hi first. Toshi said, “They come to class to get a grade, not to meet people or talk to people. They leave right away and don't talk to other people. I don't get why students run out of class, packing up and running out immediately.” I disagree with Toshi, Americans do not go to class just to receive a grade and pack there belongs up and run out of class. In my classes I see people coming and going with the same person. Others I see walking out together talking about what they did in class, etc. What this mean to me is that people have their own preferences, meaning some talk more than others, but it does not mean we go to class just to receive grades. In order to be eduacted you have to know when it is the right time to trust stangers and when to become comfortable with them.
The Working Life of a Waitress
Most of this reading focused on the author’s mother. It was said in the reading that owning your own restaurant is not always easy. No one in my family has ever owned their own business but I know people that have. Owning your own business is not all about making money, there is a lot of stress to follow along with making money. The stress that follows is paying the bills, finding good working people, finding the right insurance, and many other reasons. Another thing that was mentioned in this reading was how waitressing is not as easy as people assume it is. I can also relate to this because I work at a restaurant. When you are waiting on people you have to have manners and always be positive towards the customer in order to please them. In my opinion pleasing the customer is the most important thing because an angry customer will not come back. Therefore if the customer does not come back, the business can fail. From reading “The Life of a Waitress I Leaned that in life we have to work if we want to make money and give others a good life. The author said that from hearing about his mother’s hard working life and what she faced has taught him to be more meaningful and to appreciate things. What all of this means to me is that working hard and trying your best in life will make you happy as well as others around you.
